HEAT DISSIPATION is defined as the process that occurs where electrical components have a thermal connection that generates waste heat which is absorbed by heatsinks or metallic surfaces.
Control involves the proven method of circuit board design and control unit, active and passive heatsinks, Thermal Interface Materials (TIM) in paste form (applied manually or with an automated process) as well as TIM in the form of pads.
Gap fillers are soft, elastic and relatively thick thermal pads with heat conductive properties. With their material thickness and elasticity, they compensate for height differences between components. Entire PCBs with different component heights can for example get connected to a heatsink. Furthermore, gap fillers compensate for elastic thermal expansion coefficients (cte) and reduce stress due to vibrations. Due to the low hardness, no great forces (contact pressure) are required to bond surfaces together. They are therefore also suitable for mechanically fragile components and assemblies (e.g. no bending of PCBs).
Heat conductive gap fillers known as heat conductive pads provide good thermal properties as well as the scope for compensating for small, medium or large gaps between the components (hot spots) and the heatsinks, thereby minimising thermal resistance. Here, the heat conductive pads provide a thermal connection between the heatsink and the relevant components, facilitating optimum heat dissipation even for relatively large gaps between components. This protects components against overheating.
Gap fillers exist in a silicone-free version that does not exude oil. This can be important for sensitive electrical contacting or other requirements since these gap fillers do not emit volatile siloxanes.
The basic material for these silicone-free gap fillers is acrylic.
The consistency of heat conductive paste makes it harder to apply. When large quantities are involved, it is only suitable if a reliable process can be assured for repeated application. In addition, fluids always bring with them the uncertainty of ageing and the question of reliability. In contrast to this, heat conductive films can be cut to size as required, making them easy to process. Self-adhesive heat conductive films are also in frequent demand, whether adhesive on one or both sides. They minimise pre-assembly work and provide a secure thermal connection between the heatsink and the power component.
Heat conductive films dissipate heat during the operation of electronic components, primarily in the power electronics and lighting industries.
