Electrical insulation is used in electrical engineering to limit the flow of electric power from metallic housings to conductive components such as circuit boards or bus bars. This also includes the insulation of air and creepage paths that would be too small because of available installation space. This can substantially increase service life and assure robust long-term characteristics. As standard equipment, classic insulation materials are used for this.
For safety reasons and for all certification, compliance is required with defined air and creepage distances. The following section provides you with more information about air and creepage distances and how to define them.
The shortest distance between two conductive parts is designated as an air gap. These are rated in accordance with expected overvoltages, taking account of the rated values of the surge protection device used and the anticipated ambient conditions as well as measures taken to protect against pollution.
In contrast to this, the creepage distance refers to the shortest distance along the surface of a solid insulating material between two conductive parts. Creepage distances are dimensioned in accordance with the working voltage and the anticipated ambient conditions, also taking account of measures taken to prevent contamination and of the insulation materials used.
Drive systems are becoming ever more powerful, and smaller at the same time. Miniaturisation requires ever more compact systems and these entail design challenges. The self-adhesive provision of insulation films applies to the installation of unstable films and for precise positioning as well as durable mounting. Here, the adhesively bonded surface may be complete or partial.
The film shown here is used to insulate against electrical breakdown between individual components with due reference to UL94 requirements.
Slot liners are used primarily in electric motors and alternators. They are installed in grooves or slots as insulation to prevent electrical flashovers. Slot liners are made using materials from all classes of insulation material and they clad the grooves or slots in sheet metal packs.
The intermediate layer provides isolation between the various battery cells, e.g. on an e-bike.
